The assignment for the thesis project was to create three units. One of 30 m², 60 m² and 90 m². I found my inspiration after watching a documentary of Pano called 'Te huur/ te duur' . It showed how people who struggle with poverty have to live in Belgium. The problem is that on one side we don't have enough subsidised housing and on the other side, that houses with a low rent have a lack of living quality.

The social-utopic project of Ghent was 'De Neermeersen'. A region where a dozen of appartment blocks were built. I chose the appartment block called Elektra. With a lack of collective space, circulation and greenery, Elektra does not have a lot of qualities to offer.

 

I started to adapt the building by adding vertical circulation from the front of the building to the back. Horizontal circulation was the second step in the additions.  By adding greenery, the collective spaces got more value. With 12 construction layers, I decided to go for a repetitive cluster. This cluster consists of two construction layers where units of 30, 60 and 90 m² are placed in.
